⚠️ Important Update: From 1st June 2026, the Tees Active Adult Weight Management Programme will no longer be available via self‑referral. Access will only be possible through referral by a GP or other healthcare professional.

About the programme
Tees Active’s Adult Weight Management Programme is a 12‑week course designed to help adults build healthier habits through physical activity. When you join, you’ll have unlimited access to:

  • Gyms
  • Swimming pools
  • A wide range of fitness classes

Support is available at Billingham Forum, IB Leisure (Ingleby Barwick), Stockton Splash, and Thornaby Pavilion.

Cost
The 12‑week programme costs £42, paid upfront at the venue when you attend your first session.
This is heavily subsidised and works out at £3.50 per week for full access to Tees Active’s fitness facilities.

Eligibility criteria
To join the programme, you must meet the following:

  • Aged 16 or over
  • Live in Stockton‑on‑Tees or be registered with a Stockton‑on‑Tees GP
  • BMI 30+ (or 27.5+ for people of Black African, African‑Caribbean or Asian origin)
  • BMI 25+ with controlled health conditions (or 23+ for people of Black African, African‑Caribbean or Asian origin)
  • Motivated and ready to make lifestyle changes
  • If you prefer not to provide weight or waist measurements, a healthcare professional can confirm that the programme is suitable for you.

Who the programme isn’t suitable for
The programme cannot be offered to people who:

  • Do not meet the eligibility criteria
  • Have severe or moderate frailty
  • Are pregnant
  • Have an eating disorder
  • Have significant unmanaged health conditions
  • Have had bariatric surgery within the last 2 years
  • Have Type 1 diabetes or newly diagnosed diabetes without clinical support
  • Have profound or multiple learning disabilities without support
  • Have learning disabilities with behaviours that challenge without support
  • Are inpatients under mental health or learning disability services without staff support
  • Have medical conditions that require more specialist weight management

Non-urgent advice: Tees Active - Physical Activity

Active Health is a 12 week physical activity programme which is designed to help participants manage and improve their medical conditions. It includes gym, swimming, and group-based classes that are appropriate for patients with a wide range of comorbidities. Note – there is a small charge per session for Active Health. There are options for participants to continue with classes that they find are beneficial beyond the initial 12 weeks.

PLEASE NOTE:
1) The initial consultation, gym induction and 2 following consultations are free and are funded by Stockton Borough Council.
2) Each session (gym, swim or group exercise class) is priced at a subsidised price of £3.95.
3) Discounted committed membership options also apply.

Inclusion Criteria
• Motivated to increase physical activity levels
• To help manage and improve medical conditions
• BMI < 40
• Clients who require weight loss – refer to Lite 4 Life
• Stockton-on-Tees residents only

Exclusion Criteria
• Unstable Angina
• Unstable or acute heart failure
• Post MI or cardiac surgery e.g. CABG / Angioplasty / Valve Surgery / Pacemaker / ICD
• New or uncontrolled arrythmias
• Resting or uncontrolled tachycardia
• Unstable diabetes
• Resting DBP > 100mmHg
• Resting SBP > 180mmHg
• Symptomatic hypotension
• Febrile illness
• Covid 19
• Frailty
• Pregnant
• Eating disorder
• Co-morbidity
• Bariatric surgary
